King Philip II

In Spain he was called the Prudent King, but Philip II made one very imprudent decision - he sent the Spanish Armada to invade England in 1588.

Biography

Philip II (Spanish: Felipe II de EspaƱa; Portuguese: Filipe I) (born Valladolid, May 21, 1527, died El Escorial, September 13, 1598) was King of Spain from 1556 until 1598, King of Naples from 1554 until 1598, king consort of England, as husband of Mary I, from 1554 to 1558, lord of the Seventeen Provinces from 1556 until 1581, holding various titles for the individual territories, such as duke or count; and King of Portugal and the Algarves as Philip I from 1580. He also ruled a vast empire in the Americas, including New Spain and Peru.

Philip was the eldest son of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and his consort Isabella of Portugal.
